Dear Neighbors,

Welcome and thanks for dropping by my website, Janine Materna for City Council (51st - Council District- Staten Island, NY).

The South Shore of Staten Island is my home. Not only was I born and raised here, but a lifetime of experiences on the South Shore has also shaped me into the individual I am today. Growing up in the towns of Great Kills and Prince’s Bay provided me with the opportunity to be a part of a community that felt more like a small town – I knew my neighbors, teachers and classmates very well, yet still lived within an amazing city of limitless possibilities.

Over the years, however, I have unfortunately watched this small town feeling dissipate and change in many undesirable ways -- overdevelopment, congested roads, traffic and commuting delays, and crowded classrooms. Pollution has tainted our environment and it is affecting our health. Asthma and lung cancer are on the rise on the South Shore and this needs to be stopped. Prior administrations have done us severe harm, but now we have the opportunity to change that. We must not lose sight of what has made the South Shore of Staten Island so special and we must demand that our voices be heard. It’s time for a new choice and a new voice that will represent the South Shore of Staten Island with a drive to make a difference for our future.

I am proud to live on the South Shore of Staten Island and I believe in keeping it a safe, family-friendly, pro-business community, and that's why I'm running for City Council in the 51st district. If elected Councilwoman, I pledge to be the voice of our neighborhood and work towards preserving the small town feeling of the South Shore while still developing it in ways that can make our community a better place to work and live for the future.

Throughout the campaign process, I will be sharing my vision for a better South Shore of Staten Island and I look forward to meeting many of you face to face. I welcome your ideas and believe that together we can improve the quality of life and protect our future in our wonderful South Shore of Staten Island.
